High-dose vitamin D₃ does not improve progression-free survival in metastatic colorectal cancer

Final results from the Phase 3 SOLARIS trial (A021703) published in JAMA report that adding high-dose vitamin D3 to first-line chemotherapy and bevacizumab did not significantly improve progression-free survival compared with standard-dose vitamin D3 in patients with previously untreated metastatic colorectal cancer, reported Medical News Today, MedPage Today, EurekAlert, Pharmacally, France’s Science & Vie, Germany’s Arzteblatt, Italy’s Evolutamente, and the UK’s The Intelligent. RadiCaL results show radium-223 does not delay serious bone issues in kidney cancer

Results from the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology’s Phase II RadiCaL trial (Alliance A031801), the first randomized study of a radiopharmaceutical in kidney cancer, found that adding radium-223 to cabozantinib did not improve the length of time patients went without a symptomatic skeletal event in patients with metastatic kidney cancer and bone metastases. AFT study finds greater cognitive decline with one prostate cancer drug

Cognitive health is an important consideration for people receiving long-term treatment for advanced prostate cancer, reported a panel of experts in Urology Times. They cited the AFT-47 ARACOG trial presented at ASCO earlier this year. Read the Alliance news story.

Twice-daily radiation linked to better quality of life for people with limited-stage small cell lung cancer

A patient-reported outcomes analysis of NRG/Alliance LU005 published in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology suggested that twice-daily radiation was associated with less clinically meaningful decline in longer-term quality of life compared with once-daily radiation, reported Medical Xpress and Oncology Learning Network.

Drug therapy reduces hot flashes in men receiving hormone therapy for prostate cancer

 An Alliance trial has found that oxybutynin, a drug commonly used to treat overactive bladder symptoms, reduced hot flashes compared with placebo in men receiving androgen-deprivation therapy for prostate cancer. A new film from the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology and produced by BBC StoryWorks showcases the significance of participant involvement in advancing cancer research and improving care. The feature, produced as part of the global Rewriting Cancer series, tells the story of JaTaun Williams, a 68-year-old special education teacher diagnosed with lung cancer after seeking medical attention for COVID-19-like symptoms, reported BBC, News Medical, Bright Surf and Head Topics. Watch the film. Alliance highlights the importance of clinical trials on World Breast Cancer Research Day

On August 18, World Breast Cancer Research Day, the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology highlighted the importance of clinical research in advancing better treatments and improving early detection to ultimately help prevent and cure breast cancer, reported Gene Online, News Medical, Bioengineer, and UK’s Head Topics and Biotech Now. Trial examines whether some breast cancer patients can stop pembrolizumab after surgery
Sara Tolaney, MD, of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, leads Alliance A012103, a Phase III trial for people with early-stage breast cancer who have no signs of cancer remaining after preoperative chemotherapy and pembrolizumab. This trial compares continuing pembrolizumab after surgery with observation to determine whether patients can safely avoid additional treatment, reported OncoDaily.

New Alliance trial tests targeted drug for people with grade 3 astrocytoma

Ugonma Chukwueke, MD, of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, leads Alliance A072301, a new Phase III trial for people with newly diagnosed IDH mutated grade 3 astrocytoma, a type of brain cancer. The trial will test whether adding the targeted drug vorasidenib to temozolomide after radiation can help keep the cancer from coming back, reported OncoDaily. Read the Alliance news story. 

Alliance trial tests targeted treatments for meningioma

Alliance A071401 led by Priscilla Brastianos, MD, of Mass General Brigham, is evaluating targeted treatments for people with meningiomas that have returned or continued to grow. The trial matches patients with treatments based on specific genetic changes in their tumors, reported Open PR.
